Accent walls are popular — but not all add value. Some are poorly installed and others don’t really bring out the best of the room. Who you hire and what you “put up” makes a big difference.
In Olive Branch and Memphis homes, the key is balance. Some homes have a modern look while others are historic. I really love the variety of style here. It gives me a lot to work with.
What Adds Value to Wall Accents?
- Clean, proportioned board and batten woodwork.
- Wainscoting done correctly, not just slapped on.
- Feature walls that complement room scale and aura.
- Unique, natural wood accents used thoughtfully.
- Wooden ceiling accents or panels over drywall.
These elements feel intentional — not trendy. Many carpenters can mimic designs; but a true craftsman can design something that suits the space.
What Accents Do Not Add Value?
- Overly busy geometric designs that seem forced.
- Cheap materials and low-quality finish work.
- Poor alignment with architecture or trim work.
An accent wall should feel integrated, not forced. Again, many contractors can install someone else’s design. But you get what you pay for. If you’re looking for accent walls that add value, then find someone who is willing to provide you with options.
Adding Value Requires Quality.
Proper spacing, clean lines, and careful layout separate a feature from a distraction. Lets also not forget quality workmanship. Just because something looks cool on installation day does not mean it’s going to last.
If done well, accent walls:
- Improve buyer perception with unique feel.
- Add visual interest or leave lasting impressions.
- Elevate entryways or living spaces to be more welcoming.
- Gives you a sense of personality at home.
If done poorly, they date the room quickly. Most people don’t even consider the type of mood a low-scale design can put you in. To me, every square inch matters.
How Do I Delivery Quality Wall Accents?
When installing wooden accents to someone’s wall, the main thing I focus on is stability. This involves knowing where every wall stud is. All of my custom designs are tailored to the framing. If there are pieces that aren’t over a stud, then additional measures need to be taken to ensure it stays.
I also use drywall putty over all nails and sand it smooth for a clean finish. Caulking the seams of every wood accent is also something I take pride in. I want each board to appear as it it’s a part of the wall. I’ve noticed that my customers really value these efforts.
