Anything with four corners needs to rest on a sound, level foundation. A little lean may not seem like a big deal. But, the shifted weight will become a problem over time. So, I only build backyard structures on the following:
- An approved or fresh-poured slab of concrete.
- Quality deck framing or decking built by me.
- The side of a square house, barn or gazebo.

In Memphis, it’s tough to determine the cost of a pergola before looking at the space. There’s a lot of history here. I can’t build on every foundation. But setting posts is never a problem!. We can even add curtains, screens or planters if you’d like.

If you’re looking to construct a shed or backyard structure with electricity or plumbing, we’ll have to contact additional contractors. For the most part, I’m able to provide Memphis homeowners with simple framed structures that don’t require major construction or demolition work.
While the design does not provide full covering, the lattice-style roofing offers good airflow and partial shade throughout the day. Unless the sun is directly overhead, you’re going to get relief from the rays. A pergola is not meant to keep you dry. But there are custom options that can. Some homeowners let vines go wild and others add fabric for additional shade. It’s really up to you!
Once the materials arrive, a standard 7×7′ storage shed can take anywhere from 3-4 days. An 8×12′ shed usually takes a week or two. If you’re having me assemble a store bought structure, I can usually build the deck and finish the installation in one day.
Painted or not, any wood exposed to the Midsouth weather is going to wear down. So yes, it will require some attention – like anything else that sits outside. That is, if you want the structure to last. Periodically cleaning the wood with a soft brush and reapplying a clear coat will drastically improve the lifespan of any shed, pergola, playground or greenhouse. If you’ve got vines growing on a pergola or arbor, don’t forget to trim them back! I offer maintenance plans for all of my construction projects.
This is inevitably up to you. But I’ve used plywood sheeting, smart siding, wood paneling and even decking boards. For trim, I like to use either 1×4″ pine or cedar wood. The same trimboard is used for the door. We can build the deck platform out of 2×6″ or 2×8″ pressure treated wood and sub-flooring. You can install shingled, metal or customized roofing that’s decorated with any kind of flashing.
Yes. Building stuff like this is actually something I really enjoy. There just isn’t a big market for local carpenters. If you want a better quality product than the store, I can always duplicate the design. But I’m good at building shelters that are tailored to your space and animal or livestock.
This is something I try to avoid. It’s tough finding work these days. Other guys have a family to feed too. The price bidding of Thumbtack is why I decided to just build my own website. While my price may be a little higher, I put a lot more into the business and my ability to serve people well. Dropping my rates lowers the perceived value of my service. I’d rather be known for my consistency and integrity. I believe that’s how you garner respect in places like Memphis, TN.
