Demolition.
Glass panel removal is a delicate process. Leaking conservatories tend to have rotting.
Restoration
Repair wood, reseal roofing, flashing and conservatory glass window replacement.
2 year warranty
on all Conservatory repair services.
It doesn’t matter if I’m repairing some flashing, sealing a glass window panel or managing a full restoration; At 1 Handy Craftsman, I stand by my work.
Remove Old Panels.
Preparing a Conservatory Repair:
Once glass paneling has been removed, I scrape clean the conservatory roof and windows to prepare for butyl strips or wood filler. I also decide if any reframing is needed.
Conservatory Maintenance Tip:
If you’re going to hire a handyman to re-caulk the glass roof, make sure they fill gaps and brush it clean.
Re Roofing Conservatory Damage with Framing.
Kinds of Wood I Like to Use:
Cedar works great in the Midsouth because it’s naturally resistant to rot and some pests. Cypress wood from Germantown Lumber is another solid option.
Building a Conservatory Roof.
For the most part, a conservatory glass roof sits on vertical beams and cross framing. Custom cuts are required to make sure each panel is tight and flat before building the window casing.
Replacing Conservatory Glass.
Every conservatory glass panel replacement should have an overlap that rests over the base of each frame.
Wood Rot Repairs.
Quickly addressing any sign of a leak is the best way to avoid a major conservatory repair cost. In most cases, the beading that encases each glass panel is only 1/4 inch thick. Once a piece is compromised, water will spread.
The way a conservatory is constructed allows water to flow directly into walls and around windows. Here in the Memphis area, wet wood freezes and expands..
Cleaning, Filling and Fixing Wood.
The key to a quality restoration is treating all of the rotted areas. Once the filler dries, I sand it smoothe.
Roof Flashing Services.
Not every conservatory is the same. So, there can be a number of different ways to fix the flashing on or around the roofing. I always do my best to match the current design while improving protection.
Drip Edge Flashing Option.
The most common type of conservatory flashing repair is the drip edge (where the roof meets the wall). A similar type of product can be used at the peak. The goal is to help water flow over an edge.
Repair with Joint Flashing.
The other common repair stops water leaks at the seams. The picture shows a Z flashing I used to refurbish an old skylight.
Conservatory Glass Panel Replacements.
Single panel repairs take a lot of work and skill. It’s easier and a lot less risky to remove glass sections during a full conservatory roof renovation. The casing is usually connected, making it tough to break seals without affecting other sections of glass.
What I Offer With Glass:
I normally do not install individual glass panels for conservatory roofing. I will replace single windows and can clean double glazing or rebuild a dual pane.
Every panel sits on a butyl glaze or strip and a sealer is used at the seams. The beading is then installed and caulked to the glass.
A Quality Restoration.
1. Good Project Planning.
When you’re servicing any roof, you have to be aware of the elements. Mapping the project out in phases keeps everyone on track and the interior dry until the conservatory repair is complete.
2. Safety Over Speedy.
A glass roof on a conservatory isn’t a stable surface. Using the right equipment and gear keeps the refurbishment on track. Extra precaution also avoids the cost and setback of glass breaks.
3. Craftsmanship Detail.
A conservatory repair is a fun project to work on. It should be important to any carpenter to restore the original architecture.
