First and foremost, always use pressure treated lumber for posts, planks and gate framing. For pickets, I personally like the look and durability of 3/4″- 7/8″ construction-grade boards. But cedar wood is a popular choice in the Midsouth. The reliable fencing option has natural oils that repel insects and withstand rot. This makes the lifespan of a cedar fence is superior to most other woods. I like 6″ wide pickets, but I can install smaller sizes. During the summer, prices are a lot higher. Pickets can run anywhere from $2.40 to $7.98 a piece. So consider this when comparing prices and be strategic with planning!
Most of the wooden privacy fences I’ve installed have been 6 feet tall and involve a large gate. If you want to discourage neighbors or creeps from peeping over your fence, you’ll want to go with an 8 footer. But building a gate will cost a little more. I’ve actually built a fence that was 6 feet on one end and 8 feet on the other. It was on a slope and the Memphis homeowner wanted a level fence line.
Honestly, I think it’s my genuine desire to build you a quality fence that lasts. I mean, I’m eager to earn money, but it means nothing if the job is unsatisfactory. I think this is rare in the solo carpentry and handyman trade. As far as wooden fence construction goes, I stretch the 2×4″ planks across the 4×4″ posts to strengthen the frame. In other words, I don’t like to butt them together on the post. It’s not as sturdy. This technique takes a little more time but is well worth it when winds are blowing.
I can build any wooden fence that doesn’t require a lot of manpower. I have the ability to hire a crew but typically work alone. I have design software to map any fence line and lumber accounts to ensure we get the right wood. I have some personal favorites, but I like to hear your thoughts before making any recommendations.
Depending on the weather near Memphis and obstacles in the way (such as shrubs, rocks, roots, chicken wire, etc..), I can normally build 100 feet of tight 6 foot fencing in 2-3 days. The first day usually consists of material organization and measurements. The second day, leveling a line and setting the posts. From here, we install the planks and pickets. An 8 foot fence has an extra row of 2×4″ planks.
