If you know me, you know I enjoy a challenge. Trying new things helps you see what you’re made of. Not just from an egotistical standpoint – but also mentally working through things. This custom framed kitchen pantry was no exception. I’ve built some cool stuff, but nothing like some framed-in shelving on tile.
The Carpentry Came with Conditions..
The first requirement of the project kind of threw me for a loop. The metal shelves were inches from the light switch. The homeowner insisted that we could frame the wall studs sideways (and that he’d done it before). As long as he was for it, I knew I’d do a good job.
The second requirement of the project involved the sliding door. I’d need to re-frame some of the ceiling joists to make sure the mount, track, and glass doors were secure. After taking a peak in the attic crawl space, it didn’t seem too bad. And it wasn’t. The work area was within feet of the ladder.

What I thought About the Framing.
My only requirement of this custom framed kitchen pantry was that it’d be anchored to the floor. Since I’d never worked with these types of doors before, I was a little nervous how long they would take to assemble and install. I was pretty confident with everything else. Framing and drywalling is in my carpentry wheelhouse.

Takeaways From the Custom Framed Kitchen Pantry Project.
In hindsight, the most difficult part ended up being the ceiling joists. While there was plenty of room, there wasn’t much to lean on. I’d be lying if my mind wasn’t distracted by the thought of coming through their kitchen ceiling. But, I got the job done well.
The homeowners even blessed me by asking me to trace their gas line to the fireplace. I definitely walked out of that attic with a little more confidence and leg strength. That’s for sure!

I’m Grateful for the Work and Relationships.
Installing the crown moulding took a little longer than planned. We initially thought I was going to have to mount the metal cover that came with the sliding door. But, I was able to make it work.
I’m really pleased with the way this custom framed kitchen pantry turned out. The couple’s hospitality and homemade dinners made the time enjoyable. I can’t say enough about the people that invite me in their home and treat me like family. It means a lot to me.
